Is your plant ready for a new home
Repotting can sound intimidating, but it’s one of the best ways to help your plant thrive. Whether your green friend is root-bound or just outgrowing its current container, here’s how to know when it’s time - and what to do next.
Signs it’s time to repot:
Roots are growing out of the drainage holes
Water runs straight through the pot
The plant looks top-heavy or wilting despite regular care
It’s been over a year (most plants like fresh soil annually!)
Step-by-step: How to repot
Choose the right pot. Go one size up—about 1–2 inches wider in diameter. Make sure it has drainage holes.
Prep your plant. Water it the day before and gently loosen the root ball.
Add fresh soil. Use a high-quality, well-draining mix tailored to your plant type.
Center your plant. Place it in the new pot and fill around it with soil, leaving an inch from the top.
Water thoroughly. Let it drain and settle in!
Pro tip: Avoid repotting during a plant’s dormant period (usually fall/winter). Spring and early summer are ideal.
